Changes at ANCAP

The Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) Board has announced that its CEO, Nick Clarke, will step down at the end of September to pursue other interests.

Mr Clarke has been with the organisation for 10 years, holding a number of roles, culminating in the role of CEO. In this time he built the well known program to have a strong consumer recognition and support across Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The success of this program is demonstrated by the fact that safety now ranks equally with price and most buyers look for ANCAP ratings when buying a car.

ANCAP will also have a new Chair with long standing Chair Lauchlan McIntosh AM reaching the end of his term and handing over to NRMA Deputy President, Wendy Machin. Mr McIntosh will remain on the Board as a Deputy Chair and assist with the transition to a new CEO.

Mr McIntosh paid tribute to Mr Clarke for his commitment to seeing Australian consumers have access to safer cars and better information about safety features.

“At times the work we have done at ANCAP has been controversial as we have pushed to raise the bar on safety standards,” Mr McIntosh said.

“Nick Clarke has been a fearless and passionate advocate for safer cars and there is no doubt that his work has led to the saving of many lives and less injuries.

“We wish him well in whatever he chooses to do next and thank him for the work he has done over his years at the helm of ANCAP,” Mr McIntosh said.

Incoming ANCAP Chair, Wendy Machin said that the combination of the two as the leaders of ANCAP had greatly advanced the cause of road safety, not only in Australia, but throughout the world as they have sponsored the introduction of testing programs in neighbouring countries.

“Both Nick and Lauchlan have been tireless campaigners for the safest possible cars and uncompromising about the standards we accept in Australia. The high level of consumer awareness of the star ratings is a direct result of their efforts.

“On behalf of the ANCAP Board I would like to acknowledge their combined efforts and thank them for their contribution,” Ms Machin said.
