Sports car, SUV or hatch - maximum safety available for all car types

Maximum 5 star ANCAP safety ratings were today announced for three very different car types. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Land Rover Range Rover and Toyota 86 were the latest recipients of 5 star safety ratings from the independent vehicle safety organisation, ANCAP.

The new A-Class hatch offers a range of advanced Safety Assist Technologies including collision prevention assist as standard. This technology provides the driver with a visual and audible collision warning enabling them to react to an imminent crash. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is available as an option.

An 'active' bonnet is also standard equipment on the A-Class. The bonnet is activated when sensors detect a pedestrian has been struck. This provides greater clearance between the bonnet and hard elements of the engine beneath, reducing the risk of serious head injury.

Adding to the 15 large SUVs which already hold a 5 star ANCAP safety rating is the Range Rover. This rating applies to variants with the TDV6 engine. The TDV8 and petrol variants are unrated.

All variants of the Toyota 86 sports car also now hold the maximum ANCAP rating. Safety features available on the 86 include dual frontal, side chest and side head (curtain) airbags and a driver knee airbag; emergency brake assist (EBA); and daytime running lights (DRL). The 86's sister model, the Subaru BRZ, also holds a 5 star ANCAP safety rating.

"It doesn't matter what type of car consumers are looking to buy. There's now a multitude of makes, models and car types which have achieved the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating," said ANCAP Chairman, Mr Lauchlan McIntosh.

"The range of cars we've released ratings for today exemplifies this," Mr McIntosh added.

Consumers can search ANCAP safety ratings either by car type, make/model or star rating at ancap.com.au.

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, Australian state and territory governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
