Model History & Safety

These results apply to all-wheel-drive Ford Territories manufactured from January 2006. Similar results could be expected for the rear-wheel-drive version of the Territory.

Dual front airbags and ABS/EBD brakes are standard on all variants. Head-protecting side curtains are standard equipment on the TS and Ghia variants

and optional on the TX variant. Electronic stability control is standard on all-wheel-drive variants and the Ghia RWD. It is an option for the others.

An advanced seat belt reminder is fitted to the driver's seat. The front seatbelt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seatbelts. Pretensioners are fitted to the seatbelts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. These seatbelts also have load limiters to reduce chest injury. A three point belt is fitted to the centre rear seat and provides better protection than a two point belt.

Both driver and front passenger airbags are dual stage to give better protection in different crashes.

Overall Evaluation

The Territory scored 12.57 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well. There was a moderate risk of serious chest injury for the driver and passenger. Each had a slight risk of lower leg injury.

The vehicle was awarded a default score of 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test.

A pole test was conducted on the TS variant (fitted with curtain airbags) - see separate result.

Frontal Offset Crash Test

Body region scores out of 4 points each: Head/neck 4 pts, chest 1.14 pts, upper legs 4 pts, lower legs 3.422 pts.

The passenger compartment held its shape well in the offset crash test. The accelerator pedal moved rearwards by 57 mm and upwards 12 mm. By design, the brake pedal hinge separated during the crash, allowing the brake pedal to swing freely. This reduces the risk of lower leg injury. The feet were protected from footwell deformation by a laminated insert under the carpet. The steering wheel hub moved forwards 61mm, upwards 23 mm and sideways 7 mm. The front ("A") pillar moved 8 mm rearwards. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash all doors could be opened with normal effort.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. There were no deductions for knee hazards. The passenger's head was also cushioned by an airbag.

Side Impact Crash Test

Default 16 points awarded for side impact test.

The side impact test normally used by ANCAP simulates a small car striking the driver's door of the vehicle under test. It is based on a regulation test but the regulation does not apply to vehicles with a high seat height like the Territory. Experience shows that such vehicles can be expected to perform well in this test so ANCAP has decided to award full score for these vehicles instead of conducting a crash test.
