The tested model of Subaru Liberty (known as the Legacy in New Zealand) was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in January 2015. This rating is based on crash tests of a Subaru Outback. ANCAP was provided with evidence that the Liberty gives comparable occupant protection to that of the Outback. This ANCAP safety rating applies to all Liberty variants.

Dual frontal, side chest and side head airbags (curtains) and a driver knee airbag are standard. Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. The Eyesight system, with many crash avoidance functions, is standard on all Liberty / Legacy variants. Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats.
