Independent vehicle safety advocate, ANCAP welcomes new Morrison Ministry.

Australasia’s independent authority on vehicle safety, ANCAP, has welcomed the announcement of the new Morrison Ministry, commending the Prime Minister for appointing a dedicated Assistant Minister responsible for road safety.

“We welcome the continuation of the Hon. Michael McCormack MP as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development,” said ANCAP Chair, Ms Wendy Machin.

“It is encouraging to see the importance of road safety elevated with Scott Buchholz MP appointed as Assistant Minister for Road Safety,” Ms Machin added.

“There are a number of key road safety challenges to face and this provides clear national leadership.”

“One of the areas that needs to be addressed to reduce road trauma across the country is a reduction in the age of the vehicle fleet with Australians four times more likely to die in a crash in a vehicle that is 15 years or older.”

“We must also educate and encourage the community to embrace new vehicle technology. Automated safety systems are critical in addressing the number of road deaths in rural and regional areas, as well as pedestrian and cyclist fatalities in cities.”

“The Government has committed to a National Office of Road Safety and Office of Future Transport Technologies, and we look forward to seeing these established under this renewed leadership to progress these and many other road safety initiatives.”

“We look forward to working with the Deputy Prime Minister and Assistant Minister Buchholz to ensure we continue to encourage the safest vehicles possible and that all Australians remain safe on our roads,” Ms Machin said.
