Online deliveries continue to thrive, and so does the commercial van market. To ensure van purchasers can weigh up safety alongside load capacity, independent ANCAP safety gradings are now available for:
The Commercial Van Safety Comparison is undertaken as a parallel consumer information program to ANCAP’s traditional star rating program – allowing consumers and fleets to compare the availability and performance of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across the commercial van market (NA and NB category vehicles).
Debuting into the Australian market this week, the fully-electric Kia PV5 Cargo delivers a safety grading of PLATINUM with an overall performance score of 91%.
The seventh-generation VW Transporter just outscored the Kia, with a score of 93% (PLATINUM). This result aligns with that of the Ford Transit Custom, with both the Transporter and Transit Custom equipped with the same, well-rounded ADAS system.
Staying within the smaller NA category segment, the Fiat Scudo earns an ANCAP safety grading for the first time, achieving a GOLD level of active safety performance (67%). As with all other vans in this latest assessment batch, the Scudo is equipped with autonomous braking, emergency lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, speed assistance, and a driver monitoring system. Its performance across these systems, however, was mixed – offering reduced overall capability to that of the Kia PV5 Cargo and VW Transporter.
Moving into the larger NB category vans, model twins – the Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato – share GOLD gradings, each with a score of 77%.
Four of the five vans lack reverse emergency braking – a safety feature designed to help reduce the risk of reversing incidents in the busy, built-up areas these vehicles often frequent.
Each of the vans was tested against ANCAP’s 2023-2025 commercial van grading criteria.
Safety gradings for 20 current model commercial vans are available at www.ancap.com.au/vans.
