The tested model of Mazda2 was introduced in Australia at the end of 2007. This rating applies to variants fitted with side (thorax) and side curtain airbags, and electronic stability control (ESC).

Dual front airbags and antilock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) are standard. Side airbags and head-protecting side curtains are standard on the Genki variant and optional on others in Australia. Side airbags and curtains are standard in New Zealand. Electronic stability control (ESC) became standard on Australian variants from May 2010. ESC was available on some variants prior to then. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats. Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. A three point seat belt is fitted to the centre rear seat. This provides better protection than a two point (lap) seat belt.
